National Prisons Hepatitis Network ‘Speed-geeking’ activity – Eliminating hepatitis C in the Australian prison sector

The National Prisons Hepatitis Network (NPHN) will be hosting a workshop during the VH2022 Conference in Brisbane. Please join us for an afternoon of the popular interactive ‘speed-geeking’ discussion activity, where you can hear from experts and participate in fast-paced, small group discussions on a variety of topics relating to hepatitis C elimination in the Australian prison sector.

The consensus statement makes several recommendations for best practice standards in hepatitis C prevention, testing and treatment in the prison sector based on available evidence.

Gilead Sponsored Symposium – No one left behind: Making cure a reality for the remaining Australians still living with hepatitis C.

You’re personally invited to an Australasian Viral Hepatitis Conference Symposium for registered healthcare professionals supported by Gilead Sciences.

The patient voice: Esha Leyden is a Peer Harm Reduction Worker at the Queensland Injectors Health Network and AIVL Board Member. They provide supporwt and education to people with hepatitis C and the safer use of injecting drugs. They have lived experience in a custodial setting, of hepatitis C and treatment, and injecting drugs. This experience allows them to have a strong understanding of the challenges faced by community and their ongoing needs.

Innovative models of care, patient engagement and treatment choice: Dr Joss O’Loan is a General Practitioner at Medeco Inala, which was awarded RACGP General Practice of the Year 2018. He is also the co-founder and Director of the not for profit organisation, Kombi Clinic, which is a Hepatitis C outreach model of care for disenfranchised people in Queensland, delivered from a 1975 yellow Kombi Van.

Patient case study: Mary Fenech, a qualified Nurse Practitioner since 2007, has worked in Hepatology, Blood Borne Viruses and Sexual Health for more than twenty years. Mary’s broad experience includes clinical trials, tertiary care and guideline authorship. She is currently providing outreach clinics through QuIHN in Brisbane and surrounding areas, to serve a variety of marginalised populations with viral hepatitis.

Hepatitis C in Drug and Alcohol Settings

This free training face to face training aims to provide participants with the knowledge and confidence to increase the management of HCV in alcohol and other drug settings.

People who inject drugs represent approximately 90% of newly acquired hepatitis C (HCV) infections.
This course aims to provide addiction physicians, general practitioners, nurse practitioners, and other practitioners working in Drug and Alcohol settings with the skills and knowledge to diagnose HCV, manage comorbidities and treat HCV.

Speakers: Jeremy Hayllar – Clinical Director of Metro-North Hospital, Dr. Nada Andric, GP, Earlwood General Practice and Hayley Thompson –Hepatology CNC.

Learning Objectives

• Describe risk factors for HCV, enabling discussions with clients around prevention and harm reduction
• Screen, order and interpret tests appropriately to diagnose chronic HCV infection
• Describe the recommended pre-treatment assessment, including liver disease staging
• Determine the appropriate antiviral therapy for the treatment of HCV and explain treatment to the patient
• Implement monitoring and post-treatment follow-up recommendations

Hepatitis B Prescriber Update

This free face to face training will provide HBV prescribers an opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills to practical case studies spanning diagnosis to treatment initiation and ongoing monitoring.

The session will be held during National Reconciliation Week and as such will have a focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and your role as a HBV s100 prescriber in supporting hepatitis B management and treatment in these populations. Case scenarios are developed by ASHM clinical advisors or local experts to meet the identified learning needs of ASHM’s HBV prescribers, which vary from each State and Territory.

Target Audience: Accredited HBV s100 prescribers practicing in Queensland.

Speaker: Dr Josh Hanson, Infectious Disease Physician, Cairns Base Hospital.

Learning Objectives

• Plan guideline-based monitoring for patients with chronic hepatitis B
• Evaluate chronic hepatitis B patients’ suitability for antiviral treatment
• Select and prescribe appropriate first-line antiviral medication for patients with chronic hepatitis B
